We like to complain about our first world pains. We complain when our Internet connection is too slow or if we failed to get seats on the bus.

Nick Vujicic is a preacher and motivational speaker who was born with Tetra-amelia. Tetra-amelia is a rare disorder characterized by the absence of all four limbs.

Born in Brisbane, Australia, Vujicic struggled as a child. He was not allowed to attend mainstream school due to restrictions in Victoria state law. When the laws changed, he was the first disabled student to be integrated into a mainstream school.

Vujicic’s life was a hard one. He was bullied in school and at the age of 10, tried to drown himself in six inches of water. After his failed attempt at suicide, he struggled accepting his disability until eventually realizing that he could use his life to inspire others.

He has mastered overcoming physical obstacles to his daily life. He learned to write by using a special grip that allowed him to write using the two toes of his left food. He has also learnt to use the computer and type using the “heel and toe” method.

Additionally, he can also throw tennis balls, play drum pedals, get water for himself, comb his hair, brush his teeth, answer the phone and shave.

He has taught himself to be independent.

In the 7th grade, he worked with the student council of his school to raise funds for local charities and disability campaigns. When he was 17, he began giving motivational speeches at prayer groups and founded his non-profit organization, Life Without Limbs.

At the age of 21, Vijucic graduated from university with a double major in Accounting and Financial Planning. Professionally, he travels around the world giving motivational talks focusing on teen issues. He markets a DVD titled “No Arms, No Legs, No Worries” that aims to tackle the key issues of self-worth among youths.

The next time we want to complain about measly problems like our arms are tired, remember that Nick Vijucic has no arms. When we complain about having too much work to do, remember that Nick Vijucic can only type with two toes.

The next time we want to complain about something trivial, remember that there are some people who have lost so much, but still smile at the storm.
